Your mother was right. If you cannot say something nice, do not say anything at all. Why should people be criticized or insulted because you cannot resist the urge to "spoil" the atmosphere or the mood of that poor soul? Seriously. Put yourself in that person's position. How would you feel? Annoyed, I am sure.
So, the next time you have the urge to "insult" a poor soul for no real reason, remember yourself and how you would feel if that happened to you. Instead ask that person, how are they feeling and how is life.

I often tell my children that when they open up their mouths to say something they should do a quick check so see first-is it nice and second-is it necessary. I guess it's hard to do those checks on everything that comes out of our mouths.
For some folks, instincts warn them when they are about to say something hurtful.
For others, it takes an embarassing or painful comment from another to make them more sensitive about what they say. I think that those kind of people have been taught to go against their instinct.
I believe that at birth our instincts tell us to be kind and thoughtful. It's our environment that teaches us otherwise.
What do you think?
Dear reader,
You have very good points. I, too, believe that we have certain instincts at birth.
The environment, especially parents or caregivers, changes a person.
